The Government of Tamilnadu has started distributing 131 crores compensation for fishermen, whose livelihood was affected, which was spread after the collision of two ships last year.

Spill of crude oil was on January 28, 2017 in which a cargo vessel was left after vacuuming liquid petroleum gas and another vessel filled with petroleum oil lubricant, which was on the way to berth in the Kamarajar port of Ennore.

This dispersion had affected the livelihood of the fishermen from Ennore Harbor to Mahabalipuram along the eastern coast, in which three districts of Chennai, Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur were included.

The government said that after the various rounds of talks, a total of Rs 141 crore has been collected from the shipping companies involved in the incident.

While 131 crore affected fishermen will be disbursed, again 10 crores have been collected for rehabilitation efforts.

On Friday, the Chief Minister gave compensation amount to 21 fishermen from three districts, in which 1,11,448 affected fishermen were eligible for welfare.

Due to the spread of oil, members supporting the fishermen and support groups have been divided into seven categories and accordingly compensation will be received.
